長垣，西周時屬衛國。春秋時期，衛國于長垣之地同時置蒲邑（今長垣縣城）、匡邑。戰國時期，衛之匡邑、蒲邑，被魏國兼并。此地在當時有一道長墻，或曰防垣。此防垣或用于防水，或用于防兵，此時已有“長垣”之名。根據楊寬所著的《戰國史》載：“魏在沿黃河地區還有圓錢（無郭）流通，鑄造的城市主要有共、垣、長垣（今河南省長垣縣東北）等城。當時鑄錢多用于地名，可見當時的防垣很長，故稱長垣，而首垣則為防垣之首，長垣名由此而來。”
